Exploration is key
For the first blog of my VR project, I wanted to dive into the essential questions and decisions that need to be addressed in the first few weeks of development. I’ve spent some time in the past dabbling and experimenting with a VR, and now the challenge is to scale up and create something more complex (an AI-driven VR experience that's educational or helpful to be precise.)
I’ve been exploring different VR/XR technologies, specifically the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3, and both have their ups and downs that make them interesting for the project. While the Meta Quest 3 seems to be more user-friendly for beginners (and I happen to have one at home), the Apple Vision Pro outshines the quest with its more advanced mixed reality capabilities. However, most applications for the Meta Quest are developed in Unity, which aligns more closely with my current skill set, while the Vision Pro leans on Apple's SDKs and frameworks.
In the context of building the VR experience itself, I’m wrestling with the direction of AI implementation. Should I create a personal assistant-like experience where the AI answers questions and guides users based on their individual situations, or should I aim for something more expansive and immersive? A virtual environment powered by AI has potential. Maybe something that makes the learning experience of the user nicer.
I've researched a bit and found 2 content creators on youtube that really dive into the process of starting with VR. I've scrolled through these videos in the past and got the hang of it "quite easily". So these provide a solid base to start. Dilmer Valecillos explains Apple's side while Valem Tutorials explains more in depth meta classes. It will take a few days to soak in the classes. Wish me luck!
In conclusion of my research today and yesterday, my approach will likely focus on a VR environment in Unity for the Meta Quest 3 as a first step. This will give me a solid foundation to work with before considering more advanced platforms like the Vision Pro. The focus in the early stages will be on creating a basic project, with plans to add AI once I get more comfortable with the basics of VR development.
